Ayurvedic Ingredients for Healthier Foods

Dr Ashwinikumar Raut delivered an invited presentation on “Ayurvedic Ingredients for Healthier Foods” at the seminar Exploring Wholesome Ingredients for Holistic Health, held on 18 October 2019 at Hotel Kohinoor Continental, Andheri (East), Mumbai, organized by PFNDAI.

Drawing from the Charaka Samhita, Dr. Raut highlighted the Ayurvedic principle that every substance can serve as medicine when applied with appropriate knowledge and intent. He explained that Ayurvedic ingredients range from simple food elements to complex herbal and mineral preparations, traditionally used in health foods such as Chyavanprash, Gulkanda, turmeric-based drinks, and amla products.

The presentation emphasized that the effective use of Ayurvedic ingredients in functional foods depends on understanding the Rasa-Guna-Karma framework, along with individual factors like prakriti, dosha balance, and dhatu quality. This approach supports personalization and enhances therapeutic benefits.

Dr. Raut also discussed the growing application of ingredients such as Ashwagandha, Tulsi, Ginger, and Turmeric in modern foods and beverages. He noted that health outcomes depend on factors including plant part used, dosage, formulation compatibility, and duration of consumption.

The talk concluded with a call for closer collaboration between FSSAI and Ministry of AYUSH, integrating nutritional science and food technology to strengthen the future of Ayurvedic health foods and public health empowerment.

Management of Osteoporosis with Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants

Dr Ashwinikumar Raut delivered an invited lecture on “Management of Osteoporosis with Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants” at INDOMEDICON 2019, the 8th Anti-Aging Medicine and Research Conference, held at Hotel Kohinoor Continental, Andheri (East), Mumbai.

In his presentation, Dr. Raut explained the Ayurvedic concepts of Asthiasarata, Asthikshaya, and Asthidushti, correlating them with modern conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis. He emphasized Ayurvedic clinical assessment methods, including evaluation of nails, hair, teeth, and musculoskeletal function, alongside contemporary diagnostic tools like DEXA scans.

The talk highlighted a holistic Ayurvedic approach to osteoporosis management, integrating therapeutic procedures, medicinal formulations, dietary regulation, and lifestyle modifications. Dr. Raut further discussed the application of Reverse Pharmacology as an evidence-based Ayurveda framework for drug discovery and development.

Key insights were shared from a one-year clinical study on Dalbergia sissoo (Shinshapa) in post-menopausal osteoporosis, which demonstrated improvement in musculoskeletal symptoms, reduction in inflammatory and biochemical markers, and stabilization of bone mineral density. The findings support the potential role of standardized Ayurvedic medicinal plant extracts in integrative osteoporosis care.
